2.6.6OutboundDocumentConversion
2.6.6.1WhatisDocumentConversion?
Document conversion is the process by which the fax server takes your cover sheet plus any
attachments and converts them into a faxable image format (TIFF). In order to provide this
functionality,NETSatisFAXtionrequiresthecooperationoftheapplicationthatcreatedthatfile.
IMPORTANT: When troubleshooting document conversion, always remember to test cover sheet (RTF)
files as well. When sending a fax that includes a cover sheet, this document must undergo conversion
as well. Even if the attachments you are submitting are working, the cover sheet might still fail, causing
the whole fax to be returned with a “conversion failure.” Cover sheets (RTFs) are handled by Microsoft
Word(ifinstalled)orWordpad.
2.6.6.2ServerSideConversionvs.ClientSideConversion
Normally when using Microsoft Fax or FaxOut Client Suite clients, document conversion happens on the
client when the user prints to the Fax or FaxOut printer. When they send the fax, the only conversion
the server must do is convert the cover sheet (if needed). Requiring users to convert documents on the
client delivers superior results since the user can preview the fax before it is sent, it saves processing
timeonthefaxserver,anddoesnotrequirethatapplicationtobeinstalledonthefaxserver.
Alternately, email fax and FaxOut Client Suite users can attach the document itself to their email, and
rely on the fax server performing document conversion. It is possible for this to fail for reasons beyond
the fax server administrator’s control, for example the document might require macros or require a
password to print. Also the users have no control over print properties and must accept the application’s
defaults.
2.6.6.3CommonConversionHelperApplications
The NET SatisFAXtion server relies on each application to convert its own file types. The following is a
basic list of commonly sent file types, and the application needed to convert each one. Make sure that all
the applications are installed and functioning properly for all the file formats you need the server to
convert.
